We Are Vermont’s 99%

We Are Vermont’s 99%

We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we’re working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent.

Budget balanced on the backs of state employees

I am a state worker since May 2008.  In July 2008 when then Govenor Douglas cut our wages 3% across the board I was devastated.  Douglas never wanted to raise taxes so he balanced the budget on the backs of Vermont state employees.  Our salaries were cut and wages frozen for three years.  To add insult to injury, in July of this year the state increased the amount of money that is involuntarily taken out for the state retirement fund.  As a state worker, we have no say in how much money we wish to put into the retirement account.  To make matters worse, we cannot get a hardship withdrawal,  I was facing eviction and desperately needed to be able to take money out of my retirement account just as anyone else can who has a 401(k) or 403(b),  Unfortunately as a state worker we cannot take out hardship funds irregardless of the problem. I realize this issue is mainly an employer/employee/union issue however everytime the state has budgetary issues, we the workers suffer!
